What services to cancel when you move to Australia
5 minute read ⌚
We’re really approaching crunch time now. At the time of writing, we are just in negotiations for a completion date on our house sale, and Dani is ordering the move cube so we can ship the remainder of our belongings to Australia.
We have a meeting booked in for 5 am UK time with Rental Search AUSTRALIA, so we can begin our house search in Adelaide, and we’re equal parts nervous and excited for that.
Nervous because we’re feeling the pressure around choosing the right suburb to live in, along with the right school for the children.
And exciting to be able to put some firm plans in place finally, and hopefully view some potential future homes, albeit over video call.
Don’t Forget the Admin!
Ah, yes, the admin, the never-ending admin.
If moving from the UK to Australia were a university degree, this final step would be the dissertation.
The house sale in itself seems like a never-ending form-filling exercise, although at least the solicitors prepare a lot of that on your behalf.
The additional life admin – bill cancelling – that is on you to remember.
Where to start, though?
Well, we’re going to go over some of our stuff here to give you an idea of what you might need to do.
| Service Name | Service Type | Web Link |
|---|---|---|
| BT | TV and Internet | BT cancellation info |
| Sky | TV and Internet | Sky cancellation info |
| Virgin Media | TV and Internet | Virgin Media cancellation info |
| Now TV | TV and Internet | Now TV cancellation info |
| Octopus Energy | Energy | |
| British Gas | Energy | |
| Ovo Energy | Energy | Moving out info |
| EDF Energy | Energy | |
| Scottish Power | Energy | Moving out info |
| E.ON Next | Energy | Moving info |
The above table is just the tip of the iceberg. Writing this made me realise just how many services and service types there are out there. It might warrant its own section on the website!
Subscription Services
The number of streaming services I pay for is crazy when I think about the use I get out of them.
TV Streaming in the UK includes –
- Netflix – Check out their ‘Moving to a new country’ advice
- Prime
- Disney
- Apple
- Paramount
There is also your music provider –
- Spotify – Account adjustment when moving country
- Apple
- YouTube
- Deezer
With these services, it seems you can keep them running until you get to Australia and then update once settled and you have your new address and bank account sorted out etc.
It’s not unusual for people to travel, so I can’t see that people would get locked out if the service detects your IP address as coming from Australia rather than the UK.
I’ll report back on my findings when we move to Adelaide, hopefully in 3 weeks’ time!
We are using Rental Search Australia to find us a place out there, and our agent, Marcal, has been really helpful in our meetings so far and managed all of our panicked emails and questions in our video call expertly.
Check them out if you are planning a move down under from the UK.
