Funding a Flight to Australia

How to Fund the Flight to Australia

As of now, we are waiting to hear if our 190 visa application is successful or not.

If we’re lucky enough to be granted a visa that allows us to emigrate to Australia we’ll need to get an aeroplane (it’s a long way to walk).

Flight Cost to Adelaide
Expedia Flight cost to Adelaide for August 2025 for our family of 4. Two Adults, one 13-year-old and one 10-year-old 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦.

The distance from London to Adelaide is 10,100 miles. The flight duration is 20 hours plus. It would be by far the longest flight we’ve ever taken. I imagine anyone’s first flight to Australia from the UK is their longest flight mind you.

What are the Flight Costs?

Expedia flight costs were sitting at £3,718.48 when I searched last week.

I anticipate flights will go up in price by the time we’ll be flying from the UK to Australia. So a target of £4,000 seems about right.

How to Raise the Money?

Current visa processing times
Current 190 processing times

We have time before we move to Australia. Probably at least 6 months, potentially up to 18 months and more according to the current processing times.

While we are funding our Australia move largely via selling our own property in the UK, we want to pay for the pre-migration costs such as visa application fees, migration agent costs and flight costs via our own savings.

To contribute to those run-down savings, we think it would be good to kill two birds with one stone and have a good old clearout of the house.

Save 5% on Your First Order

When making the move to Australia, by shipping baggage ahead, you can save money and avoid excess baggage fees, skip the baggage carousel and best of all, travel with whatever you need, not what the airline restricts you to.

By using our link you can save 5% on your first order, and we’ll get a small commission too, at no extra cost to you.

Sell, Sell, Sell

Selling unwanted items on eBay and Vinted can generate more money than you think.

Someone in the UK can sell £1000 of items each year tax-free.

Anymore than that and you have to declare the sales income in a self-assessment tax return.

Our Running Total

If you are reading this, there is a good chance that you are interested in flying from the UK to Australia on your own migration journey. You may be wondering how much money a family of 4 can raise by selling their old stuff on eBay and Vinted.

We’ll let you know by keeping a running total on this page.

Other Ideas to Raise Money

Matched Betting

Matched betting is something I tried a few years ago and managed to make approximately £1,500 in 6 months.

Matched betting guarantees you will win money by taking advantage of free bet offers given by betting companies when you sign up for an account with them.

To earn free bets, you will often have to place a bet for a team to win with a bookmaker, and then also place a bet on a betting exchange for that team not to win.

When you earn the free bet simply repeat the process and on a £10 free bet you’ll make around £6-7.

Earnings from matched betting are tax-free. So by repeating the process explained above, you can make some decent money to add to your Australia fund.

If you have had a gambling issue, please do not consider this. I have never been a big gambler, therefore, I was able to make some money and then dip out when I’d lost access to the free bets.
